Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin. This 5% formula provides a very gentle exfoliation and is supported by purified Tasmanian Pepperberry which is known to reduce the signs of inflammation and sensitivity often associated with exfoliation. This formula contains a studied Tasmanian Pepper derivative to help reduce acid-related irritation. It is a derivative of vegetable origin, the color of which changes with the seasons, and this color change may appear in the formula from time to time. Contraindications: Lactic acid should not be used on sensitive, flaky or damaged skin. See additional note on sun protection and other warnings in enclosed instructions. This pH of this formula is approximately 3.8. Lactic acid has a pKa of 3.8 and pKa is the most important aspect to consider when formulating with acids. pKa implies the presence of an acid. When pKa is close to pH, there is a perfect balance between salt and acidity, maximizing the effectiveness of the acid and reducing irritation. Higher pH values would then increase the salt content, which, oddly enough, would make the formula even more irritating than if the formula were more acidic. Note: While lactic acid can provide a quick visible effect, we generally suggest indirect forms of skin exfoliation in favor of direct forms such as this formula due to the potential for inflammation and sensitivity associated with acids. The product is water-based, so apply it under oils and face creams in the evening.
